# Speaking & Writing assessments

Speaking and Writing Assessments are designed to evaluate language proficiency, communication skills, and task performance through structured assessment activities. They can be used to replicate the format and scoring approach of standardized language tests such as **IELTS**, **TOEFL**, and **PTE**, or to create custom assessments tailored to specific learning, hiring, or certification objectives.

Using the assessment editor, test creators can build assessments with a variety of question types, including read-aloud tasks, open-ended responses, and task achievement questions. Each question can be configured with its own scoring criteria, maximum score, and weighting, allowing creators to align assessment results with their evaluation standards. This flexibility makes it possible to create assessments ranging from simple speaking exercises to comprehensive multi-section language proficiency tests.

In the next few sections, we will review the sequence of steps for creating speaking or writing assessments.
