Last updated 24 days ago

In the Describe an Image question type, test-takers write a short report based on visual data, such as a graph, chart, table, or diagram. They summarize the information, highlight key trends, and make comparisons where relevant.

The scoring system then automatically assesses the test taker's writing and provides a vocabulary, grammar, cohesion and task achievement score aligned to IELTS standards.

Note: To get a reasonable scores test taker must write between 150-300 words.

Getting started

To get started, do the following:

  • Choose "Describe an Image" from the list of question types to display the associated configuration panel.

  • Type the instructions for the test taker either in the Question field on the left or the Task Description field on the right in the configuration panel, as shown in the image below.

Configuration panel

The configuration panel for the Describe an Image question type consists of three fields:

  • Task Description

  • Image

  • Image Description

Let's understand each one using the example question shown below:

Example Question: "Take a look at the chart below and perform the task as outlined: This graph shows the proportion of four different materials that were recycled from 1982 to 2010 in a particular country. Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features, making comparisons where relevant."

Task Description

In this field, provide the instructions you want the test taker to perform. For instance, the image below shows the example question entered into the task description field.

Image

Upload the image of a graph, pie chart, or any visual data you want the test-taker to analyze in this field. For instance, the image below shows the uploaded image of the line graph, that the test taker needs to analyze for the example question.

Image Description

In this field, provide a detailed description that highlights the key aspects of the image. The test taker's response will be measured against this description. Speechace AI uses it as a reference to assess whether the test taker has accurately captured and described the image’s main details.

You can enter the image description manually or let Speechace AI generate it automatically by clicking the Generate button shown in the image below.

You can preview how the question will appear to the test taker by clicking the eye icon in the configuration panel, highlighted in the image below:

What the test taker sees

The test taker will see the question on the left side of the screen and a writing area on the right to provide their response, as shown in the image below. They will have preparation time before the response time starts to submit their answer.
